“Success isn’t given, it’s earned on the track and on the field with blood, sweat and the occasional tear.” KHELOTSAV- 2019, the AICS Athletics Meet of Udupi District was held in the grounds of St May’s English Medium School (CBSE), Kannarpady, Udupi on 30th of November, Saturday with the spirit of sportsmanship, team work, discipline, competitiveness, focus, commitment, time management and more importantly aplomb.
The formal inaugural ceremony of the Athletics meet commenced at 8:45 am. The dignitaries were welcomed and escorted to the dais by the Principal and vice principal of the school accompanied by the school band. The school student choir sought the blessings of Almighty. The formal function was presided over by Rev. Fr Valerian Mendonca, the correspondent of St Mary’s Educational Institutions, Udupi. Rev Fr Johnson Sequeira, the principal of the school, welcomed all and introduced the guest of the day Dr Vincent Alva, Principal, Milagres College, Kallianpur, to the gathering. Rev Fr Valerian Mendonca hoisted the AICS Athletics Meet flag. The chief guest inspected the march past and received the guard of honour from the athletes from various schools. The host school athletes had a torch lap. The torch was handed over to the chief guest after which chief guest declared the AICS ATHLETIC Meet open by releasing the balloons and sports meet officially begun by lighting the cauldron. Master Shravan of the host school administered the oath taking ceremony.
Rev Fr Valerian Mendonca, Correspondent, St Mary’s Educational Institutions in his presidential address admired the beautiful march past by the athletes from different schools. He said, “Olympic torch symbolizes the spirit of sports. Athletics Meet fosters friendship and good relationship among the participating schools and athletes. He gave a call to the students to come up with new records in all the events. “Taking part in the sports meet is important and not winning because life is all about fighting till the end and not winning,” he opined.
The chief guest of the event Dr. Vincent Alva said, academics and sports walk hand in hand and competing with each other for medals in the hot sun is not very important but competing with others is. He congratulated the school for organizing such a mega event and asked the athletes to carry the memories of friendship from meet.
The Correspondent of the school presented memento on behalf of the school to the chief guest as a token of love. Mrs Renuka Acharya proposed vote of thanks. Mrs Florina, Mrs Eunice and Mrs Roopa Ashok coordinated the programme.
A formal valedictory ceremony started at 4:00 pm. Dr Thomas J Quadros, Principal, Glowinstar Integrated School, Udupi was the chief guest. Mrs Rita Quadros, vice principal of the school welcomed the gathering and introducing the chief guest to the audience. Guest of the closing ceremony in his address told that AICS ATHLETIC MEET 2019 was a most awaited event and St Mary’s took up the responsibility of organizing it and succeeded in making it a mega event. Sports and games are part and parcel of life, in fact sports is most important in life because life is greatest race and fighting and completing the race of life is important than winning or losing. Unless failures there is no success and this lesson of success is learnt in the ground. Everyone is born to win and victory is seen in one or the other phase of life by all he opined.
The students who showcased extra ordinary performance were honoured with individual championships. Little Rock Indian School, Brahmmavar and St Mary’s English Medium school( CBSE) kannarpady were declared as overall champions of Khelotsav-2019 in girls and boys category respectively and were awarded with trophy by the chief guest. The guests were presented with mementoes by Fr Johnson Sequeira. The sports meet concluded by lowering the AICS Athletics Meet flag which was handed over to the principal of the school by the guest after taking a victory lap by the individual champions of the sports meet. The official closure of Khelotsav -2019 was done by putting off the flame.
As many as 550 Athletes from 24 schools of Udupi took active part in all the events without thinking about victory and defeat. Nearly 20 physical education teachers from in around Udupi schools served selflessly as officials of different events. “Winning is not everything but making the effort to win is’ was well understood by the Athletes. This mega event was witnessed by a large number of parents, guardians, school management committee members and well wishers who enhanced the beauty of the venue by their gracious presence.
Mr Gerald Pinto rendered words of gratitude. Mr Vinaya suvarna coordinated the programme very well. Khelotsav – 2019 was successful with the hard work toiled by Mr Gerald Pinto, Mr Bhaskar, Ms Renuka and Mrs Amitha, the physical education teachers of the host school with the assistance of the teaching and non-teaching staff of St Mary’s. The whole event concluded by singing National Anthem paying respect to the nation. Rev Fr Johnson Lawrence Sequeira, Principal of the school provided all the required guidance and reinforcement. Vice Principal Ms Rita Quadros rendered her support in the execution of this mega event Khelotsav – 2019.
