Annual Sports Meet held in St Mary’s English Medium School, Kannarpady, Udupi.

“Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does.” The Annual Sports Meet of St May’s English Medium School (CBSE), Kannarpady, Udupi was held in the school ground on 30th of September and 1st of October with the spirit of sportsmanship, team work, discipline, competitiveness, focus, commitment, time management and more importantly aplomb.

The formal inaugural ceremony of the sports meet commenced at 9:15 am on 30th September, Monday. The school student choir sought the blessings of Almighty. The formal function was presided over by Rev. Fr Valerian Mendonca, the correspondent of St Mary’s Educational Institutions, Udupi. Mr. Vinay suvarna, welcomed all and introduced the guest of the day Dr. Nelson Pinto, DNB Ortho, Club Doctor, FG Goa, ISL, to the gathering. Rev. Fr Valerian Mendonca hoisted the school flag. After which the chief guest inspected the platoons and received the guard of honour from various houses of the school led by Master Atheeth, SPL and teachers group led by Mrs Roopa Ashok.

Correspondent appreciated the students for their participation in the mass drill and march past. He also appreciated the message given by the chief guest and stressed on the need to take part in all the events without thinking about the results.

Being a doctor the guest of the day stressed on the need to have a balanced and nutritious diet. He suggested few tips to the students to be successful in their life starting with rising early, perseverance and having quality food. Team spirit and forgiveness walk hand in hand was his special message to the students. Participation is the stepping stone and success comes over a period of time he added. He concluded his address by quoting ‘Study with open mind.’

The students presented beautiful and systematic mass drill under the guidance of physical education teachers of the school. After the torch relay, the torch was handed over to the guest who declared the sports meet open. Master Mohith, the sports leader of the school administered the oath- taking ceremony. The balloons were released to symbolize the opening of the sports meet. A colourful and rhythmic display by the students of 8th grade was a feast to the eyes of those who gathered. Inaugural programme came to an end with the words of gratitude proposed by Mr. Gerald Pinto, Physical education teacher of the school.

A formal valedictory ceremony started at 3:00 pm on 1st October, Tuesday. Rev Fr Valerian Mendonca, Correspondent of the school presided over the programme. Ms Manisha D’souza, National level silver medalist, an alumna of the school was the chief guest. The students who showcased extra ordinary performance were honoured with individual championships by the chief guest of the day. The school flag was lowered by the president of the programme which was handed over by master Atheeth, SPL to Ms Manisha who declared the sports meet closed and handed over the flag to the correspondent of the school. The students of grade IV presented a cultural programme on this occasion.

The chief guest appreciated the drill and hoop dance which was a part of the valedictory ceremony and thanked the school authorities for the opportunity given to her to be a part of the programme. By addressing the students she said, ‘Teachers will figure out your talents, what you need to do is to listen to them.’ she also asked the parents to give their TIME to their children and to encourage them to take active part in both curricular and co-curricular activities. She concluded her words by saying that, ‘In St Mary’s you see more, you do more and be more.’ Take up challenges and practice well, give equal importance to academic and non-academic activities said the correspondent in his presidential address. He congratulated all for making the sports meet a memorable one. He winded up by motivating the children and asking them to go out to the world being the ambassadors of the school.

The students of the whole school took active part in all the events without thinking about victory and defeat. “Winning is not everything but making the effort to win is’ was well understood by the students.

Mrs Cybil welcomed the gathering, Mrs smitha D’souza rendered vote of thanks. Mrs Florina and Mrs Eunice coordinated the programme on both the days. Rev Fr Johnson Lawrence Sequeira, Principal of the school provided all the required guidance and reinforcement. Vice Principal Mrs Rita Quadros rendered her support in the execution of sports meet.
